Gartshore have completed extensive work on the structural foundations to the old Tauranga Post Office building, not only to take the extra weight from the upstairs alterations but also to strengthen the building in order to bring it up to current seismic standards. As you can see from the photos provided, the smaller brick foundations constructed in 1905 stand alongside the new footing recently completed by Gartshore.
Following the removal of the old flooring required for structural alterations as with any building of this age you find a number of surprises and unfortunately the existing timber flooring was not as expected, it had been cut, sliced and diced and replaced with various different materials. As a result it was decided to replace the old timber with reclaimed flooring to ensure the existing look throughout. The structural investigation into the wall foundations has also highlighted some issues and required the footing to be replaced with a new high grade material.
The additional photos show the original chimney with its old fire bricks. The Architect hoped to incorporate these into the new bedroom design but these are more likely to be covered in the remodeling.
The old safe, is also to be incorporated into the new designed hotel. Converting the interior into a shower, fully tiled whilst keeping the original safe door, thus adding a unique feature while keeping the essence of this historic building alive.
