Situated in the popular shopping and dining district of Ponsonby, Auckland, this narrow but long heritage building was lovingly restored into a fun and funky gelato parlour. With their huge selection of multi-award winning and mouth-watering flavours, loving hand created, Island Gelato is an absolute crowd pleaser.
Being an old building, this challenging project meant the team were required to build, design and renovate within accordance of the Heritage Building Act. With that, and the client’s design concept of ‘fun and funky’ in mind, natural rustic terracotta tiles have been laid in a herringbone pattern on the floor, offset by the contrasting hatched pattern of mint mosaic tiles on the counter walls.
Custom handblown glass globe lights, hanging above the composite concrete stone beachtop, reflect on the reeded glass panels below. While solid oak tops on lacquered MDF bases provide seating where customers can sit and enjoy their frozen treats around the pink speckled leaners, cut out of floor tiles atop of steel pipe supports.
